FIELD NOTES Doug BELL Location: Goat Rock, Phelps Ranch, 6mi. NW Redway, CALIFORNIA Humboldt County March 26, 1988 0800: as we drove past rock (Goat Rock), saw Peregrine sitting on snag, at south end of rock. We drove to ridge sw of rock, got gear out. Heard screaming, Peregrine still on snag. 08:05 : at observation post. Peregrine still on lower snag @ . Wailing about every 2 minutes. 08:15 : Peregrine flew from snag (A) to (B). Quite actively looking about. This has a very dark head, clean breast, light barring/spotting; breast mostly cream- colored - little purplish stripe.. In about 15 min the bird has been settling on (B); wailing regularly (every 30 sec, for a few short wails - complaining - like. 8:25 : Peregrine flew to pothole (E), which is relatively small with a thick bunch of grass in front. The Peregrine was "uneasy" in the hole - moved about almost antinomously. The hole is probably deep. The bird tried several times to settle down in left corner of hole, rotating 360° - settle - rotate - settle. Then up, moved to behind grasses, pick at something, move
