FIELD NOTES
Dung Bell
Location: Alcatraz Island
Date: March 17, 1988 -cont.
gulls resting on cistern. Many other birds seen today-
Whit-crowns singing; about 225 Western Goshes
off the west end of the island; a J Kestrel flew up
to the water tower. Starlings, especially a male
chasing a female for quite a while. As of 13:46
the male mallard is still resting on the cistern.
All day long 3-4 pairs of gulls have been
striping the grassy area off the close right side
corner of the cistern (territories 23, 26, 34, 27). Even
pair 1 comes over from their their spot to communally
choke. They alternate between bouts of grass-pulling/choking,
and resting resting as a group of 3 clumped pairs-odd,
how close they will sit to their enemies:
