FIELD NOTES Dung Bell Location: Alcatraz Island Date: March 17, 1988 -cont. gulls resting on cistern. Many other birds seen today- Whit-crowns singing; about 225 Western Goshes off the west end of the island; a J Kestrel flew up to the water tower. Starlings, especially a male chasing a female for quite a while. As of 13:46 the male mallard is still resting on the cistern. All day long 3-4 pairs of gulls have been striping the grassy area off the close right side corner of the cistern (territories 23, 26, 34, 27). Even pair 1 comes over from their their spot to communally choke. They alternate between bouts of grass-pulling/choking, and resting resting as a group of 3 clumped pairs-odd, how close they will sit to their enemies:
