FIELD NOTES
Doug Bell
March 4, 1988 - Drove from Berkeley CA to Santa
Barbara, CA. Left Berkeley at 5:10 p.m., arrived
Santa Barbara at 11:05 p.m. Quite foggy on the way.
March 5, 1988 - Up at 3:30 a.m. Steve Howarth came
out of his house, I followed him along with a crew
from SW Maine Fisheries Branch to the boat
at the harbor. A total of 12 people loaded into
the boat "Spirit of Santa Barbara"; including a
pup harbor seal + sealion. The latter two were set
for release at Santa Barbara Island. It was still
dark when we left the harbor. It was dawn when
we reached Anacapa Island. I started chumming for
gulls and in no time we had a large contingent of
birds around. I shot 4 birds - DAB 234-237.
Sea was fairly calm. No problems. We then
proceeded out to Santa Barbara Island. When
we were within 5 miles of the island we
slowed down, began chumming. I managed
to shoot 5 adult Western Gulls: DAB 238-242.
Used a total of 17 shells for 9 birds; but
I dropped a bird with every shot except for
2 or 3. One bird I missed twice. Many others
had to be shot a second time on water. Rough
waves. We then proceeded on to an anchorage spot
on the NW end of the island. Arrived at 12:30.
I continued working up the gulls. Finished every-
thing by 16:00. The others meanwhile had gone
