FIELD NOTES
Doug Bell

LOCATION: ALCATRAZ ISLAND, San Francisco Co., Calif.
WEATHER: Warm, sunny. Light wind.
With Bob Jones collecting dead gulls on the island.
Disturbance level of adults still very high. Majority of
chicks are 3/4-grown to fledged. Some nests have ca. 2-3
week-old chicks, but these are isolated cases. Lots of
fledged young resting on shore and in water of northeast
side (point) of the island. Rough numbers of chicks are as
follows (includes fledged birds in water):
Powerhouse: 10 West slope of Island (next to 69
Cistern: 45 Industry Building)
Industry Building: 32 Barker Beach Cliffs 14
North-east point + water: 82 Parade Grounds 48
Rubble area + cliffs west of Parade Grounds: 25
Cell House Roof: 27
Dormatory: 15
Did not see any Glaucous-winged Gull this time.
One Heerman's Gull sighted flying past the west shore.
