LOCATION: Alcatraz Island, San Francisco Co., Calif
WEATHER: warm, sunny, light wind.
TIME: 10:00 AM - 14:00
With Bob Jones trapping gulls. Surveyed cistern and Industry Building areas. No noticeable changes from 7/1. Gulls easily disturbed. Went to Parade Grounds and searched for nests with eggs. Found 3 nests— one with 3 eggs and 2 with 2 eggs each. Chicks were present overall— found one nest with chicks < 1 wk. old. Other chicks ranged from 2-6 weeks in age. Set trap out over 3 egg clutch. Observed pair (both good Western's) cautiously walk around trap—one almost went in, but stopped in doorway. Nibbled trap with bill. The two birds stood near the trap for about 1 hour. Then one bird hopped up on top— sat down on roof of trap—as if “incubating”. I re-centered the trap over nest, positioning nest closer to doorway. About 20 min. later one bird went in. Caught it (DAB 040-δ). We also picked up one dead adult (DAB 041) and one dead chick (DAB 042). Parade Grounds Saw an adult breeding plumage Glaucous-winged. Observed it clearly—it circled over parade grounds and main building a couple times. It had wing tips that were only slightly darker than the mantle.
