FIELD NOTES Doug Bell June 14, 1985 LOCATION: Protection Island, WA. (Jefferson Co.) TIME: 8:00 - 12:00 Trapping gulls on plateau colony - up on bluffs and along road near cabins on south side. Caught ♀ (032) off 2-egg clutch. Mate (♂) looked similar - would not go in trap. Caught a (♂) 034 on a 2-egg clutch in another trap at the same time. Mate unknown. Caught a ♀ (036) off a 1-egg clutch. Mate unknown. Saw a pair of Harlequin Ducks on way back to mainland. LOCATION: Deception Pass, WA. [Strikethrough text] June 15, 1985 (Skagit Co.) to and thru San Juan Islands (San Juan Co.) WA. WEATHER: Clear, sunny, warm. Underway with Robert Opp and Jim Nessler in the 18' Boston Whaler for a tour of the San Juan Islands. We headed due west out of Deception Pass to Colville Island, located off the south-east end of Lopez Island. Colville I. is a former study site of Walla Walla's. Colville [illegible] is a relatively small island, ca 500 yds x 200 yds. Very steep, rock sides which make landing difficult without special preparations. The islands hosts maybe 1000 gulls. Pelagic Cormorants were also nesting on it. We then headed around the SE end of Lopez Island. Near Pt. Colville saw feeding flocks of Glaucous-winged Gulls, Sabine's Gulls, Pigeon Guillemots, Pelagic Cormorants and Cassin's Auklets. In Watmough Bay (Lopez Island) we observed an imm. Golden
