FIELD NOTES Doug Bell JUNE 13, 1985 LOCATION: PROTECTION ISLAND, WA. (Jefferson (o.) Ring-necked Pheasants, Starlings, Double-crested cormorant, Willow Flycatcher, Amer. Goldfinch, Brown-headed Cowbirds, Rufous-sided Towhee, Marsh Hawk (?) Walked around island. Gulls nesting even on sand bluffs, cliff. Met John the caretaker. On so side of island - respectable gull colony, Pelagic & Double-crested Cormorants nesting on sandy cliff. Saw a WHITE GULL that the caretaker John had mentioned. It was sitting atop a shack on stilts at, or in the gull colony up on the bluffs & along the road, (So side). Only saw the gull for a second - looked like a damn pigeon! Grabbed my camera - but when I looked up it was gone. Nigel Ball did say this bird has a white mantle, black-tipped primaries and a spot of black on the tail. Supposedly this bird has been around a couple years. 19:30 - 21:00 - With Nigel & Doug in "spit" colony (the spit on eastern end-harbor, etc) trying to trap. Nigel pointed out some very dark-mantled birds in the colony - two of them, with very black primary tips. On ride home we scared up a Nighthawk. There is a Bald-Eagle nest near our trailer. It was successful last year - but failed this spring
