FIELD NOTES DOUG BELL JUNE 8, 1985 LOCATION: WEST BAY DRIVE, OLYMPIA, WA. HABITAT: Industrial, dikes, mud, piers. TIME: 19:00 - 21:00 Drove from Port of Olympia around bay to west side of bay. Set trap out over a 3 egg nest located on an old, meter-wide pier. This pier hosts about 15 gull nests and about 100 various- age gulls. A small grassy island near this pier supports about 8 pair. Both pier & island are across the bay from the main loading dock of Port of Olympia. The old pier which I'm trapping on also has two old boat docks, on which two Great-blue Herms are standing. A pair of Pigeon Guillemets also seems to be nesting here. Have also seen Mallards, Barn Owl, Starlings and Belted Kingfisher fly by. Robins, Varied Thrushes in neighborhood. Cedar Waxwings too! Trapping unsuccessful. Of about 30 birds, 2 had darker wing-tips than the others (these were not mated pair). Others fit "Glauca-winged" mold. Of three nests observed on the section of pier, 2 nests had 3 eggs each; one nest 1 egg.
