Doug Bell June 8, 1985 Field Notes Location: Port of Olympia, WA. 17:30 - 18:30 alarm. Gulls all flew off. Some pursued & dive-bombed hawks, along with crows. Persistent chasing. At the spot where the intense fight erupted, three birds are check, choking and giving the [a] mew call - sounds like high-pitched mew - meew - meew. Two birds will then sit next to each other, face to face, then bill. Third bird sits off ca. 1 yd away, but either seems to be trying to join in with choking & meowing, or is threatening? The two close birds are also standing next to one another and furiously shaking their heads, pointed, or rather, slanted with body head down. Head movement is fore & aft. They do this over many areas. lots of walking around - deciding on nest spot? Also choking over territory. Pair w/3 eggs too wary of trap. Other pair copulating. 18:30 - 19:00 Switched trap to nest with 1 egg. Went over to marina to look around. While doing this, saw one of the gulls finally enter the trap. Drove back to the ditch, tried sneaking up & charging trap. Didn't work. This pair of birds is also too wary. The female on the nest ran out of the trap right away. Gave up trying to trap here. Drove around port - checking docks, etc. Scared a Pigeon Guillemot out from under one dock. It made a high-pitched wheezing sound.
