Doug Bell
June 7, 1985
Location: PORT OF OLYMPIA, OLYMPIA, WA.
WEATHER: rainy at first, clearing.
TIME: 1700 - 18:30
Set out 2 traps, one on 3-egg nest, one on
1-egg nest. Birds went into both (this is the dredge-fill area) (behind the log stocks and marina). Ran out, caught only
the closer bird (DAB 022 - ?). Reset trap. After about
1/2 hour, its mate went into the trap (DAB 023 - ?).
Took the 3 egg clutch (DAB 021 - A-B-C). Both
birds similar in eye-ring, legs, mantle & wing tips.
Other areas gulls nest in Port of Olympia are: old
yellow warehouse roof, on some gravel areas amongst log piles.
Across harbor (westward side) on old pier and small grassy
knoll-like island; big flat bunys in harbor.
Also found Killdeer Nest 4/4 eggs, saw an adult
Killdeer with one fledgling. Water Pipits (?) in grassy areas
around marina.
Spent evening with Steve Speerch at home. Stayed in
Motel, few mi. N. of Olympia. Prepared Birds.
