FIELD NOTES
DOUG BELL
DATE: JUNE 1, 1985
LOCATION: CRESCENT CITY, Calif. Del Norte Co.
WEATHER: Clearing
TIME: 19:00 - 20:00
Many gulls in harbor and along crescent beach of bay. At least half are imm. No real nesting sites in bay, except for one island and an old pier. The old pier harbors some resting immatures, paired, but non-nesting adults (?!), pigeons and Belted Kingfishers. Of one non-nesting adult pair, their wing-tips were lighter than those of a good Western Gull.
At about 19:40 all gulls along beach of bay (~200 birds) took off and headed west - towards off-shore isles and up the coast.
Camped overnight at Patrick Creek Camp in Six Rivers National Forest, along the Smith River, about 12 mi. up from Gasquet, CA.
JUNE 2, 1985
Drove to Portland, Ore. Stayed in Motel 6 on Highway 26 in Portland.
JUNE 3, 1985
In the morning met Geoff Dorsey @ Fish & Wildlife Branch of Army Corps of Engineers in Portland Office. Huge blond fellow. We discussed seabird colonies along Columbia River. For most islands he suggested using 14' skiff with 10-12 hp motor.
For East Sand Island he suggested I go to Chinook, WA harbor. Klaus Richter has worked on these birds.
