FIELD NOTES
Doug BELC
DATE: JUNE 1, 1985
LOCATION: Eureka city, Humboldt Co., Calif
WEATHER: Overcast, drizzle.
TIME: 11:00am
I am near the harbor, on same street as the
Carson mansion. Viewing boat docks and Indian Island.
Does not appear to be suitable nesting habitat on Indian
Isl. for gulls. Too much human activity on the few
spots that are not covered in Salicornium marsh.
LOCATION: Trinidad HEAD & BAY, Humboldt Co., Calif.
WEATHER: Overcast, some clearing.
TIME: 14:00 - 17:00
Lots of gulls about. From the pier in Trinidad
Harbor several pairs of gulls can be seen sitting on the
various rocks in the bay. On one rock which is at the
eastern end of the boat moorings is a pair which definitely
has a nest. One bird is incubating and going thru the motions
of sitting on eggs with turning and settling (rocking). The
male (larger bird) is sitting on the pinnacle of the rock.
This nest might be trapable, but it's hard to tell how
level the nest surface is. The nest is on an incline
of about 25°, but it may be on a flatter shelf. I
may try to trap this pair.
Walked around Trinidad head. Good view of
ocean islands - lots of gulls, murres, cormorants, sea lions.
(Pelagic Cormorant and Double-crested Cormorant). Some Western
gulls are nesting on Trinidad Head itself. Saw an adult
carrying nesting material. On western side found a gull
nest & pair on a cliff. From my position I could look
down into the nest 3 eggs visible. Many, (>100)
