FIELD NOTES Doug Bell July 11, 1986 09:30 - Alcatraz I, S.F. Bay, Calif. Ray Pirrotti - recording gull calls on cistern. Tape I., side 2, near last 1/4 of tape. Broad shots of colony - recording all at once - long calls - mild alarm calls, chicks begging. Mup-mup mup calls, etc. 10:30 - Recording calls & begging at building next to parade grounds. Lots of interference from helicopters, people, pile-drivers at fishermans wharf. Collected 3 dead chicks (1 banded) off the parade grounds. 11:31 - group of adults fighting on tin roof of building next to parade grounds. One chick seen tumbling away from mothers. Outstretched wings so it wouldn't roll off roof. All 3 chicks of brood struggled to get away from fighting, reassembled together, huddling at edge of roof. 11:45 - Back at cistern. Recorded a couple intervals. Banded birds - one (S?) left leg, silver F&W & white band. ? behind him has only a F&W band, right leg. 11:50 - Adult ? in IB - regurgitates couple anchovies. 11:58 Adult in cistern - regurg. 4 anchovies - 2 chicks devour first 2, then "play" with next 2 anchovies, just as Ray's captive birds do. 12:14 - IB - chicken regurg to 3 chicks, adult keeps picking up remains to entice chicks to eat chicken chunks.
