FIGLO NOTES Doug Bell June 21, 1986 Stayed in Motel in Aberdeen, WA.. Up & out, drove around north end of Grays Harbor, to Ocean Shores. The coast north of Grays Harbor is mostly resort. We could not find a suitable place to do the gulls. Went therefore back to Grays Harbor. Found good spot to do the gulls along a river that empties into the north side of Grays Harbor. After doing them, we drove on to Olympia. Great view of Mt. Rainier along the way. Saw an active Osprey nest near the nuclear power plants. Arrived in Olympia at about 17:40. Called Steve Speich, then went to Port of Olympia. The marshy area near East Bay Harbor, just behind the huge log piles, has been reduced by 73 and filled in with gravel. As a consequence, there are only 5 gull nests on the flats here. Still, lots of gulls are all over the place at this port. There seem to be more gull nests at the pier and on the small island at West Bay Drive, Olympia, all Glaucous-winged. At 19:00 we drove over to see Steve & Chris Speich, then went on to Seattle. June 22, 1986 Another incredibly beautiful day. Spent day in the city of Ken & Sara. Watched boats & birds at the locks which control Lake Washington - Puget Sound Traffic. Good spot for gull watching. At the locks there were some Glaucous-winged birds with nearly light-gray under, pink eye-ring.
