Field Notes Doug Bell June 14, 1986 hen and flocks of Mallards (males in eclipse plumage) flying past. Western Gulls on bay. June 15, 1986 We are still heading north on the Three Capes Scenic Route. Drove past the Three Archers N.W.R. - three large offshore rocks visible from the town of Cape Meares, Oregon. Every available spot on those rocks has either gulls, murres or cormorants. We then drove on to Cape Mears Lighthouse. Good view of an offshore rock. On north path to the lighthouse there is a good viewpoint where one can see mainland sea cliffs. Isolated gulls meeting here (Western). One ad. glancous-ming flew over the lighthouse. From the path we could see nesting murres on the mainland sea cliffs - some pigeon guilemotto- guillomots, and, after a while of watching, a pair of tufted puffins. They were neat. Sat looking undecisively in front of some grassy tussocks. One bird looked like it wanted to go into a hole, but didn't. Instead, it flew down to water in a long, straight drop, out of view, only to return to its companion a half minute later (or was this the same bird). Song sparrows galore here. We drove on to Tillamook, ORt. Looks like the south jetty/spit could be good for shooting. Took a motel room at the IDLE Nook Motel,
