FIELD NOTES Doug Bed con't. June 13, 1986 Another pair also appeared mixed - female Western, but with dark irides, male Glaucous-winged, but with faded eye ring pinkish. Confusing? Question - at what point do Western gulls get yellow irises as they mature - 3rd, 4th year?. This spot good for future study. Could not get ahold of Roy Lowe. Drove on North - spent night in Motel Marina RV Park, 36220 Resort 503 985-6000 Drive on the Nestucca River. This is ca. 1 mi. spurries from Pacific City. Rainy. Saw a Green Heron along way. Forgot to note - we stopped at Seal Rocks north of Walport - St. Park Picnic area - only one good offshore rock w/ nesting gulls. Rock further out has cormorants & Pigeon Guilimots. Might be possible shooting site if I get park permission. June 14, 1986 Left the RV Park, drove about 2 mi. to Pacific City, ORE. From there we took the road down the spit to Nestucca Spit State Park. Even though it was a Saturday, there was nobody there. It had rained hard this morning, but by noon the weather was clear & sunny. We got the equipment out, and headed for the beach. Walked south along the beach about 2 miles - this Nestucca Spit is excellent for shooting gulls, good & secluded. Haystack Rock is about 3 mi. to its North. Shot 4 gulls in quick succession with 5 shots (DAB 092-095). Only one of the gulls seems to be less than pure 'Western'
