11:00 - 11:45 at cliffs along Eel River at Holmes,
Humboldt Co. CA. Took a couple pictures of the most
likely nest cliff. Very strong wind. No trucks working
the gravel bars. I scrutinized the cliffs for quite
awhile, but absolutely no sign of any peregrine falcons.
We drove on.
12:30 - 13:30 at Scotia Bluffs, along Eel River,
N.E. Rio Dell, Humboldt Co., CA. These bluffs have
always looked promising, with the best cliffs being
the most "downriver" ones. Some good trees growing
out from scattered ledges, but no great potholes visible
anywhere. These cliffs, like those at Holmes, are of a soft
sandstone which flakes away in large sheets with each
passing winter. Looked real hard, but no sign of
peregrines. Ravens & turkey vultures, great blue herons
flying along the river. Calif. Quail & lesser goldfinches
singing in brush on river's edge.
15:00 - 16:00 Looking over Trinidad Bay, CA for possible
gull hunting. After going back to Arcata and arranging
accommodation, went back to Trinidad to eat. From
19:40 - sunset (21:00) walked around Trinidad Head with
Maren. Saw: Pelagic, Brandts, Double-crested Cormorants
& nothing obvious thereof on offshore rocks. Pigeon guillemot
in Bay. Common Murres. Lots of Western Gulls
about. A positive sign. Glaucous-winged Gull flew
by too! On Trinidad Head Trail Maren and I saw
