Field Notes Doug Bell June 2, 1986 Drove from Berkeley CA to Garberville, CA. Stopped in at Hopland Brewery on way. Met Mrs Phelps, Pam & Todd in Garberville, then drove with Pam & Todd up to the ranch near Garberville, Humb- oldt Goldt County. June 3, 1986 At Pam & Todds Ranch. Around their house: bluebirds, lupuli buntings, dusky flycatcher, annas & allens hummingbirds, crow. The ranch is in the hills west of Bear Butte, from their ridges you can see King Range. Beautiful country. Open ridges, scattered firs, cedars, some oak forests. Helped Pam & Todd clean up the ground around some fruit trees. From 16:00 - 17:00 Maren and I went to Goat Rock to watch for peregrines. When we arrived, heard one bird do a ka-chuck, ka-chuck. Couldn't see it right away though. Then it appeared on a branch of one of the large snags off the rock. Great adult - very dark head, practically no malar stripe. Very light breast. Yellow cere & feet. Looked like a F. We watched here for an hour - she sat the whole time, preening every so often, rousing; when we left, she was still sitting. We walked back to ranch. Saw: kestrels, raven, red-tail, heard blue grouse, saw meadowlark, blue birds, killdeer, calif. quail, common larksbill, robins, turkey cultures.
