LOCATION: Alcatraz I., S.F. (o., CALIF.
WEATHER: High Overcast, Moderate Wind
TIME: 9:30 -
9:35 With Ray Piotti and Kevin Shaffer in blind @ cistern.
on IB - loutship fed - fish parts. Male of pair landed,
F&W S. Band + Yellow, Ray counts 50 nests in Cistern and
20 on IB. 9:28 - Copulation attempt in pair on fallen tower.
3 banded birds seen on powerhouse roof: 2 with F+W.S bands
+ pink bands on left legs. 1 bird of F+W.S band on left leg, green
band on right leg. 9:45-10:20: Seeking nests on cistern. One
nest has 2 chicks, 1 egg. Another nest, where ? bur hole in right
foot webbing, her eggs pipping. This ? so desperate to sit,
she does so with us standing 2 m away. One gull coughed up
anchovy and mors of yellow fish eggs. Bird in adult plumage except
for a few blackish tail feathers missing on fallen guard tower (cistern).
Pair count feeding (fish) on IB. This is the banded (F+W.S.+yellow-left leg)
male - the pair seems to be without a nest. Male has grey Coak &
scapularies, but it has brownish primaries and some black in tail.
Subadult seen on powerhouse roof - brown back, grey shoulders.
10:40 Pair on IB, w/landed ?, choked at spot - no nest there.
10:43 Cistern: male landed on platform, long called directly at female. ?
