Field Notes Doug Bell Alcatraz Island, San Francisco Co., Calif. March 23, 1986 11:30 am. On the cistern (North end) of Alcatraz Island. Weather is sunny, but hazy. Almost no wind. Water calm. Gulls are singly, or in pairs on the cement flat of the cistern. All birds spaced out, on territories. Whenever one bird flies in, others around it give wokka, wokka wokka calls^long calls^. Some birds giving occasional "mup mup mups" alarm call at our presence. (Marc and I are working here). Recordings: One - mixed warning calls, first low record level (1/4), later high record level (3/4). Two - pair on guard hut. Warn call at my presence. Low record level (1/4). Three - greeting long call. Record level 1/3-1/2. Long dist. Four - begging, long distance (8 or 9'). (1/2 level) Five - (1/2 record level). Direct disturbance, misc. Six - Various alarm calls, one bird. (1/2 level) Warn. Seven - Alarm calls - much background wind. (1/2 level) Eight - Alarm calls - pair of birds, both alarm calling. (3/4) Other misc. alarm calls; some wind. 2:00 pm. Observed gull on territory eating 6 in "midshipmen"? Probably courtship fed. 2:15 pm - On Industry Building - two males are ^*^ choking and going through long call dispute. Flee off, mutual picking at small rocks with bills. Males walking nearby
