Field Notes Doug Bell Aug. 23, 1985 Location: West Marin Sanitary Landfill, 1/4 mi. N. Pt. Reyes Station, Marin Co., Calif Time: 12:00- 13:30 Weather: Hot, sunny. Obtained permission to shoot gulls. Only about 30 birds were mulling about the dump. Approached the birds up a dump-slope. As they flew I fired the 410 aux. 38, completely missed one bird. Then shot a 410 cartridge, dropped one adult. Fired again, missed. After that, there were no more birds left hanging around. We waited at the dump for 1 1/2 hours, but the few birds that struggled in were, and remained, up too high. Got only one more shot at a bird, which I missed. Afterwards, we drove up Tomales Bay. Out on the Bay there were large numbers of gulls moving north. It was high tide, and most birds were out on the open water. Large numbers of gulls and egrets were resting on marshland just west of where Hwy 1 bends inland towards Tomales and along the slough.
