Field Notes Doug Bell Aug. 22, 1985 LOCATION: Tomales Point, Point Reyes Peninsula, Marin Co., Calif. WEATHER: Sunny, warm. TIME: 11:30 - 14:00 With Bob Jones on beach just north of McClure's Beach - we're walking the beach with 410 and 16 Gauge guns. Looking to collect adult gulls. Slim pickens though. Very few birds flying by, and when they do, they are decidedly out of range. Only a few juveniles pass within "spitting" range. Needless to say, we did not shoot these. We shot at a total of 3 adults, but did not bring them down. This beach was covered with tracks of racoon, fox, skunk. Also appears to be a good resting spot for Brown Pelicans, as their tracks were all over the place. We saw multiple flocks of >20 birds/flock of Brown Pelicans. Perhaps +200 birds in all. These flocks were 90% immature! May also have seen a gliding Peregrine. Also went to the West Marin Sanitary Landfill, owned by Elmer Martinelli (sons Lee Roy & Stan), hm. 663-8519, dump 663-1145. Lots of gulls, but we could [not] get ahold of Elmer to obtain permission to shoot. The dump is about 1/4 mile N. of Point Reyes Station, on Hgwy 1.
