Behle 1933 Mad River ford, 2700 ft. above Ruth, Trinity Co. Calif. May 24 Taking the left hand branch marks Summit trail. At 4850 ft. the first white fir was noted and also at this point the first snow - a few small rapidly melting banks. Black oak, yellow pine and Douglas spruce were also in association here. As we sat down to rest a grouse flew from the limb of a black oak nearby and flew down the canyon slope. No feather were found but it was in all probably a Meria grouse. One pleated Woodpecker flew into sight, alighted briefly in a yellow pine and flew on. One hairy woodpecker was seen at this locality. At 5200 ft. the first water was found - a spring seepage from the snows above. In the damp marshy places skunk cabbage was coming in. Black oaks still large trees were noted here as well as yellow pine. In this locality the timber was thinning out. Birds seen here were a Gray
