Mad River Fork, 2700 ft. above Ruth, Trinity Co., Cal.
May 24 -
Ascent to the top of Horse Ridge.
We followed the Forestry Service Trail up the ridge setting mouse,
rat, gopher and steel traps at
likely places all along to about
3500 ft. Gopher and molemounds
were observed all the way up but
the duggings were not fresh.
Along the first two miles there
were per many Audubon warblers
Black-throated Gray Warblers. One
Western Flycatcher was taken by
Glinore at about 3000 ft. At
one location in a Black Oak,
yellow pine and Douglas fir
association 4 Downy Woodpeckers
were seen close together working
their separate courses thru the
trees. One S. Sparrow Hawk was
seen in the distance and a
Blue-fronted Jay heard calling
from the bottom of the canyon.
Junco's were common from the
start of the trip. One Western
Tanager was seen at about
3500 ft.
At the branching of the trail
we continued to follow the ridge
