Nov. 20, 1936
Mr Egbert Jones of Ceres, Stanislaus Co.,
Calf. brought into the museum this morning
two hybrid ducks bred in captivity which
had been killed about October 10, 1936 by
dogs. The two ducks have remained in
cold storage since then. These preserved
as study skins with my field numbers.
1092 ♂ Gadwall x Mallard B.S.Band No. 34-546851
wt. 839.5
1093 ♂ " " " " " " 34-618591
wt. 745.5
Data concerning these is as follows:
In 1935 Mr Jones bred a wild ♂ Gadwall
with a ♀ domestic mallard of small size
coming from a strain known as "English
caller". As a result of this union or rather
following it the female laid a clutch of
90/10 eggs, only one of which was fertile.
From this fertile egg a female hybrid
was raised. In the following year, 1936,
Mr Jones bred this hybrid ♀ to a ♂
domestic mallard. In the clutch of eggs
laid by this hybrid female, all were fertile
but only one ♂ was raised to maturity.
This one was banded with B.S. band no
34-618591 and is one of those killed
and now in MVZ (no. 1093 W.H.B).
Also in 1936 Mr Jones again
bred the original pair, the wild ♂ Gadwall
