Schman to Caliente - White Pine Co.,
Spring Valley, 17 mi N. Geper.
Sept 24, 1934
the U.S. Bureau of Entomology agents scattering
poisoned grain to kill grasshoppers, the result
being the poisoning of all sage hens,
pheasants etc. in the country. Also went
into a trade against sheep and sheep
men running the country. From Baker
for 30 miles or so there was driving
snow, collecting on the windshield also
a cold wind.
Noted few Sage sparrows and Vesper
sparrows fly from the side of the road.
Horned Larks were quite numerous and
apparently little affected by weather conditions,
one flock of some 400+ birds were feeding
alongside the road, the members of the
flock actively moving about. Shot 16 from
this lot. At each outburst of gunfire they
would rise in flight and come down again
beside the road some 75 or 100 yards away.
They seemed to frequent the cleared area
on either side of the road for 25 yards
or so. Some individuals were actually
foraging on the road bed.
Threatening rain all day finally
raining a little in the evening.
These larks are practically thru with
their molt. I can see no old feathers
