Belle 1933 Mad River ford, 270 ft., above Ruth, Trinity Co. Calif. May 20. then flats and river bottoms but they become less abundant as you go north up the slopes. Very few species appear to inhabit the dense coniferous forest. One male American Merganser flying down the river. The yea, yea, yea, of the red-breasted Nut-hatch often heard in distance. Yesterday one was heard in a tall dead yellow pine still standing. The bird seemed 100 ft. to above the ground but couldn't be definitely located. Went out with Dr Grinnell last evening along his trap line and added more mouse and rat traps to his line of the previous night. For catch on this line May 20 see notes of Dr Grinnell. In Mananita bushes on bench west of camp two Bush-tits observed foraging. Was traveling in company with Black throated Gray Warbler. One Bush-tit taken.
