Bear Cr., 8000 ft., Jarbidge Mts.
Elko Co., Nevada
Sept. 11, 1934
Our camp is located about 3 miles this
side [south] of Jarbidge, 6 by road. Are utilizing
an abandoned cabin probably the former site of
a saw mill, where a small side canyon comes
in from the south and joins Bear creek. This
is all part of the Jarbidge water shed and
no grazing is allowed here. Only sheep and
cattle are found on the other side of the
divide. A bench mark has recently been placed
on the divide but its altitude is yet stamped.
We are told the divide is 8100 which checks
fairly close with barometer readings. We are
about 1/2 mile down on the Jarbidge side
of the divide.
Prospectors have been all over the area
judging by their holes. A few good sized mines
are observable in the Jarbidge direction. The
hills are covered with a good stand of conifers
consisting of Pines flexilis and Abies concolor.
There is probably some Blue Spruce scattered.
The timber is by no means continuous, but
scattered and discontinuous in occurrence. The
stand in the canyon back of camp is as thick
as any noted in the country. Certain areas
of the hills were open and covered with
stunted sagebrush.
Along the main canyon are open grass
