Mad River ford, 2700 ft. above Ruth, Trinity Co. Calif.
May 19-
at breakfast time. Red-breasted
Nuthatches seem numerous judging
by calls.
53 ♀ Black-throated Gray Warbler . wt. 8.8 grams.
Taken in black oak, 20 ft. above ground at
an altitude of about 3500 ft. Ovary well
developed. Yolk plainly visible. Would be
breeding in about two weeks.
54 ♂ California Purple Finch . wt. 23.5 grams.
Taken by Gilmore at 2700 ft. altitude near
old barns below our camp and across
the river. Notes O
55 ♂ Spotted Towhee . wt. 41.4 grams. Caught
by mousetrap, 2700 ft., at base of a
Ceanothus bush 30 ft. from small stream.
May 20-
Temperature this morning 42° 5:30 A.M.
Cloudy. Zig-zagged up the slope north
of camp for a mile then heavy
underbrush. Very quiet this morning.
Chipping Sparrows heard frequently. One
Jay (probably California) alighted in top
of black oak but soon flew on again.
One Jack Rabbit seen this morning
along the second river bottom. There
seems to be a good many birds along the
