Mad River ford, 270 ft. above Ruth, Trinity Co., Calif.
May 19
Numerous along second river bottom.
Five Callophrys humming birds around the manzanita bushes. These in bloom are the present attraction. Assumed that they will move on up the slope as it warms up and more plants develop with the spring. Black-throated grey Warblers along second river bottom and on up slope in pines and oaks. A census was kept of the birds seen. (For results see Dr Brimell's notes.)
In following up a slope in the bottom of a small ravine the nest of a Hermit Thrush was found. The bird was on the nest and left as I approached to within five feet. The nest situated in a cut-out portion (probably the work of Woodpeckers) of a large dead yellow pine, about four feet from ground, near water. Contained one egg. Bird to be kept under observation. Full description of nest and eggs later. The female flew twenty feet away and waited. No sound made. No male around.
