Behle 1934 2 mi. N. Olush, Warner Valley, Lake co., Oregon. Aug. 23 cottonwoods and poplars sometimes surround the far distant few ranch houses. I walked out on what seemed to be an old lake bed and found horned larks by the hundreds. The sun was terrible and the birds were grouped closely together in the shade of fence posts. Amie this could not accommodate all, they utilized the shade of cow chips & trim sheds. I found the luggars very shy and had I not had half loads I wouldn't have been able to obtain any. Eleven were shot. We put up the auto tent and fly and skinned turk as a birds till 5:30. It was terribly hot. We could not have stood it if coulds had not obscured the sun late in the afternoon. No matter how fast one skinned, the skin dried out and had to be dampened. Before going back to Olush I shot three more birds. ♀ 539 O Toxoris alpestuis ♀ 540 ♀ 541 Sim. 542 ♂ 543 ♀ 544 28.3? 27.1? 27.8? 32.8? 32.8? 29.5?
