At 6:00 p.m. I returned to the spot
and succeeded in shooting eight
more of the birds.
This locality is no different
from countless similar areas I
visited the last three days unless it
be the presence of a weed that
looks like Arena. This spot is near
the top of a low rolling hill on
the west of the valley. All around
is tall dense Artemisia. The birds
are found on both sides of the
road. They were in flocks and
feeding. The ground is extremely
dry and dusty. Everywhere around
was evidence of dust bathing even
among the sage clumps. Sheep
had evidently grazed along. The
place looked as tho it might have
been cleared at some time. The
birds yesterday when shot at would
circle around and come back to
the same vicinity or across the road.
Today they were much more wary
and toward the end of the
shooting would fly far into the
sagebrush where I couldn't find
them. I guess I nearly wiped out
