Mad River ford, 2700 ft., above Ruth, Trinity County California
May 18.
Altitude here 2700 ft. We are 3 miles SE about 5 by trail of Horse Ridge in a direct line. River high due to recent heavy rains. Cold and stormy with periodic spells of rain. At Ruth three Doves flew from nearby field. Snettets were singing near home. On river were a 8+4 American Merganser.
May 19.
Cold, cloudy and stormy all the deciduous trees considerably retarded by the cold weather. Cottonwoods and Willows near river have buds scarcely swollen. The manzanita, however, is in full bloom. There is the river and river bed proper, then a second river bottom some 10 ft. above the present water course, and 100 yards wide on north side to 1/4 mile wide, then a bench that rises abruptly some 30 ft. above the second river bottom and then there is a gradual rise and slope to the top of the ridge which at the highest point (Horse Ridge) is about 600 ft. On this second river bottom are bushes, thick in patches, of ceanothus or Deer brush and manzanita. The latter extends up onto the bench and a few hundred feet in places up the
