Behle 1934. Berkeley, California - MV2-21C. 174 Aug 6 6 mi W. Oroville, Butte co., calif. φad 489 Otocont alpestria rubea 27.4g. Primary 1+2 old, 3 1/3 grown, rest new. Secondary 1+2 new, 3 dropped, no papillae as yet, 4,5,6 old, 7,8,9 new. Alula old. Tail median covert being replaced. Outer rectricie old, rest in modal stages. Body plumage new. Rest about as usual - few on neck old. σ 490 Otocont alpestria rubea 32.4g. Scapulars are a deeper red than lesser coverts and tertians. Already it seems that fading has occurred. Primary 9 old, 8 has dropped, 7 1/2 grown, rest new. Secondaries 1+2 new, 3 1/2 grown, 4+5+6 old, 7 just discernible as papillae, 8+9 new. Tail - outer rectricie old, rest graded accordingly. Rest of body complete but head + neck mostly old. σ 491 Otocont alpestria rubea 25.3g. Primary nos 8+9 old, 7 half way, rest new. Secondaries: 1+2 new, 3 3/4 grown, 4,5,6 old, 7 almost full grown, 8+9 new. Tail - outer feather old, rest graded as usual with 5th from center pair just in papillae. Body complete, head + neck still juvenile feathers.
