Behle 1934. Berkeley, California - MVZ UC. 166 aug 6 6 mi. W. Oroville, Butte Co. Califi. aug 6 Bos.H.73 Otororis alpestris aubea 28.29. This is most certainly an old & terribly worn. An excellent specimen to show where molt begins. Head and forehead worn but the yellow superciliary stripe is new and the black area from the nostrils back beneath the eye and over the cheeks are new. Ear coverts are new. Chin and throat new. The tiny row of feathers circling the eye led line new. Primaries 9,8,7,6 all old. 5 half grown, 4 almost full grown, 3,2,1 new. Secondary no 1 just pushing out of sheath, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 all old, 9 is new. Primary coverts new or old corresponding to their primaries. Alula old. Greater coverts new. Median coverts old. Lesser coverts new. Marginal coverts old. Tertaries old. Scapulars old, possibly a few new. Under wing coverts old. Body all old Tail shows no indications yet. One upper tail covert new Conclusions: Molt starts simultaneous on bend of wing ( lesser coverts + greater coverts ) and eye - cheek - ear - throat region. Upper tail coverts start before Tail. Secondary no 9 is first followed by no. 1 + molt of primaries start with no 81+ progress outward
