Behle 1934 Berkeley, California - MVZ UC. 165 aug. 6 6 mi. W. Oroville Butte co. Calp. aug 6 This rubra race is certainly one of the most distinctive races of the species being especially outstanding in the reddish dark back. The yellow of forehead, chin and throat in 87 seems constant & irregular unstable in actria I & fancy the bills are larger than actria. The range is limited and I get the impression is becoming more and more so with increased cultivation in the region. One other thing is the remarkable red soil west of Oroville and more or less over the wide area and the close resemblance of the dorsal coloration of these birds to the soil. Could selection have operated to produce this.
