Oehle 1934 Berkeley, California - MVZ - U.C. Aug 3 1/2mi. S. Byron Hot Springs, Contra Costa Co., Calif: ♂ 462 Otororis alpestris actra 25.5g. Evidently an old male well under way in its molt. Differences manifest in the wings. Left wing: Primaries 9,8 old; 7 is over half grown, 6,5,4,3,2,1, all new. In secondaries no. 1 is half grown. No. 2 has fallen out or was shot out and no sheath has taken its place albeit a dark place in the skin indicates the position; 3,4,5 new. No.6 shows an unopened quill very small. Nos.7,8 present + new but No.9 is missing. Right wing: Nos 9,8 Primaries old, 7 new + little over half way grown. Remainder new. Secondaries No.1 half grown - No 2 missing, rest new except 9 which is missing. Tail practically all in molt at once. Outer pair old. Next to outer pair gone, 3rd from outside just commencing, 4th pair 1/3 way, 5th pair half way or inner or middle pair grown between 5 + 4th pairs. It would seem from this that the second pair from the center dropped first followed by the middle pair, then the 3rd pair from the center, then the 4th, 5th & finally the outer pair. From pairs of uppertail coverts are arranged on either side of the center
