Schle 1934 Museum Vertebrate Zoology, U.C. Berkeley Calif. Aug. 2 1/2 m's Byron Hot Springs, Contra Costa Co. Calif. tertiaries all three are new. All this applies to the left wing. The right wing is the same except the old No 6 secondary has dropped out. All coverts new but some of inner side still possessing sheaths. Tail feathers all new but outer pair only half grown. Few yellow pen feathers showing on neck. Few sheaths showing on breast. All rest of plumage new. [Dorothy's first bird] 28.1 grams (Immature) 5 449 Otocoris alpestris actia (Bird of year) This bird is a bird of the year as shown by certain unmistakable juvinal feathers as yet retained. The alula is made up of juvinal feathers. Primary No 9 is old as is the covert. No 8 is new but just beginning to grow. Its covert is also just starting. Nos. 7,6,5 are new but 6+5 are broadly tipped with buff. Is this a character for finding birds of the year. No 4 is half way grown. Rest of the primaries are new and full grown. Secondaries no. 1-3 are new. 4 is half way grown. 5+6 are old. The proximal three are new. All wing coverts except those mentioned are new. Both wings the same but on the right wing on stemming new
