Belle 1934- 1/2 mi S. Byron Hot Springs, Contra Costa Co, Calif. July 31 fog seems to be just the other side of the Diablo Range. This area at the edge of the foothills at the commencement of the open flat valley. I'm rather disappointed at not seeing more birds or being able to get closer. It has been worth while to get their reaction to strong wind. I doubt if they are feeding - Their flight seems as strong as any birds under the circumstances. I conclude that for protection they squat down in open fields (behind grass possibly in depressions or behind slight rises. For the most part they remain quiet but a certain restlessness is exhibited in the movement around the field. The getting up of one bird usually starts the flock up. They are not silent but utter chirps. Some evidence that some are paired yet and perhaps the notes are meant for their mates gregariousness after breeding season shown
