Behle 1934 1/2 mi S. Byron Hot Springs, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 146 July 31 quietly squatting and finally flattened down close to the ground. It seemed to be behind a slight rise in the ground. The dry grass is 3 and 4 inches tall. The bird apparently found protection thusly - while sitting in the middle of this field I could hear an occasional single chip-like note. The bird under observation showing no signs of moving I watched the field soon seeing a single bird rise followed by four others. They flew 2 or 3 feet above the ground diagonally against the wind flying for some yards then alighted. Soon they rose again and flew around causing others to rise till a flock of 20+ birds were in the air - They very shortly all alighted. I watched the spot for ten minutes seeing no movement approached. They were wary and popped up to land again. Some settled down out of sight, others held their heads up.
