Behle 1933 Height 470 ft. Humboldt Co, California. June 2- 9:30 P.M. While following along an old mine road heard a pounding in distance as though a woodpecker were busy. Pounding was intermittent. Traced it and found it was coming from the center of a dead tree along side the road 150 ft. from when I had first heard the sound. Shown over the ground at the base of the dead tree were chunks of dry half-rotten wood of all sizes the largest being two inches long and " thick. Located about 25 ft. from the ground and on the east side is the newly cut hole perfectly round and appears to have a diameter of two inches. It is 2" below the stub of a former branch. The hole is some 15 ft. from the top of the tree. Old dead branches are found above the nest and mainly at the top and the trunk below the hole is smooth and free from branches. To the north of the hole 1 1/2" is a small beginnings of a hole and has a diameter of 4" I judge. The ground is mostly covered with banks of snow but in the open place there is a lot of huckleberry oak growing in bush form. The nearest
