Behle 1933. Mad River ford, 2700 ft. Above Ruth, Trinity Co. Calif. May 30- Broke camp shortly after noon and drove to Wilder ranch where we spent the night. Last night (evening of May 29) while eating we saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk flying and staring above the trees north of our camp. This is the first one seen by any of us. May 31. After breakfast started on our way to Grane mountain via Eureka, Blue lake, to Willow Creek Ranger Station. After securing what information we could went back to top of divide and took narrow tortuous road that follows up along the ridge. Due to heavy large snowbanks were able to get to Horse Mountain, approximately 9 miles in a direct line from Grane mountain and 4 miles this side of Cold Springs. Seems to be an unusual amount of snow this year. We were told that by the 15th of May last year one could get all over the range & drive to Grane Mountain; yet this year at this time the snow is banked up four and five feet deep.
