Mad river ford, 2700 ft. above Ouch, Trinity co., Calif.

Went across the river when I had noticed many jackrabbits. Area thus flat like on my side with canthous and manzanita bushes on old river bottom and scattered bunches of cottonwoods. Small stream west of Cliff's ranch enters mad river. At this point many clumps of willows. Forest comes down to within 50 yards of stream. Digger pines there at base of abrupt knoll. Presence of many birds noted - an unusual number as to species and individuals although no census was taken. Wood Pewees, Robins, Purple Finches, Bush-tits, Cassin Vireos, 2 Black-headed grosbeaks, one 9 calliope Hummer, Flicker, were seen, 9 mail heard in the distance and one lazuli Bunting seen. Sceloporus occiden-Talis were active, one showed on trunk of Douglas Spruce 10 ft. above ground. One Western yellow- billed Sane was found. One 3 jackrabbit was killed. Along the bank of the river along drift wood and logs about a dozen mud turtles were seen.
A few days ago a skins nest was observed along the trap line being constructed apparently since there was
