Oct. 30. Advanced Class went to Botanical Gardens - many
P.C. Knights singing. Saw an unfamiliar sparrow in
Botanical Gardens. Size small as Song Sparrow, longer tail.
Rufous crown with very narrow gray median line, wider
gray line over eye; throat whitish, breast buffy, unstreaked
or streaks very faint. Much light chestnut on wings, light
wing bars, tail gray, long, emarginate. Bill bright reddish
orange - both mandibles to base. Behavior - quiet,
unafraid. First seen perched on low twig of hawthorn berry below
bridge where we were standing - possibly not fed from us.
Preening his feathers after a bath. Then ate two berries.
Dropped to ground where it fed in a very leisurely way.
Close
A grise fence was between us and the bird while he was behind
a post. Walked up to within three feet of them and
studied him several minutes.

bird seen Friday with Dr. Genniel - exactly like Field Sparrow which
has never been recorded West of Texas.
