May 27. At 4 a.m the grosbeak, spotted and brown towhee and lutescent warbler were singing. I did not stay awake to hear others. Tanagers sang frequently all day. Hermit Thrush heard. Worked all day on garage floor - finished 3 p. May 28. Beautiful weather. Returned to Berkeley via Niles Canyon. Quite hot in Contra Costa Co. May 29. Cool. Few birds singing. Moths flying about oaks again. May 30. Cooler. Fog morning & evening. June 1. Young thrasher bathing in the pool. Chilly fog. June 4. House Wren singing near boxes all the morning. Sun again. June 5. Boulder Creek. Morning chorus of birds just as loud as last week with grosbeak, tanager, purple finch, warblers, towhees, wood pewee and olive-sided flycatcher. Could not hear the thrush except to whistle at the beginning; later it was the main singer. A shower in the evening. Planted vetch: raised from seed planted in Berkeley. June 6. Cloudy morning - sunny afternoon: a light shower about 9 p.m. Kingfishers very active. Tanagers still singing. June 7. Cool. Finished burning the spruce stumps. James raised part of frame of garage. Heard Hermit Thrush. Tanager still singing. June 8. Grand bird chorus at dawn. House Wren during a.m. Found garden quite wet. Heavier showers in Berkeley than at Boulder. June 9. Very few birds about. At dawn 2 towhees and grosbeak and thrush in distance. Later a thrasher singing. Worked in garden. Rained quite a bit last night. Barely cloudy during day.
