1929 Dec. 17. A flock of 13 quail came to table to feed - the first time I have seen them there this fall. Still raining. at 4 p.m. Dec. 20. Started to Los Angeles for the holidays... Spent the night at Salinas. In the restaurant at Hotel Salinas were many stuffed animals and birds. Dec. 21. Drove on to Santa Barbara where we spent the night at Hotel Cadillo. Visited the Natural History Museum and had a little visit with Mr. Hoffman, who told me that he was concentrating on flowers. Started to Los Angeles at 11 a.m. and drove along the new Highway on the shore. Dec. 23. Los Angeles. A beautiful sunny day, warm as summer. Very dry still. James and I took a walk across from the house to Wilshire Blvd. We sat in the sun for a long time in the park opposite the High School. Anna hummingbirds, Gambel Sparrows and Butcher Birds, Black Phoebe, Mocking birds and Brewer Blackbirds were abundant. A hot walk home. Dec. 24. Busy with visiting and Christmas preparations. Fourteen members of immediate family to be at the dinner tomorrow at 8 p.m. In evening stopped walking over to Wash- ington St. with my sister Bertha to do an errand. Found the place on the North side of the street closed so started to cross at the Claudia intersection to the South side, while waiting between the two lines of traffic to get through to the curb we were suddenly struck by our automobile which was, I suppose, planning to pass behind us but was
