1929 Oct. 17 Left Berkeley for New York at 6:45 p.m. 18 Nevada - Saw about 4 Black-billed Magpies (singles), 12 Crows (groups) 12 Brewer's Blackbirds. Utah - Crossed Great Salt Lake at sunset. Many rared Grebes - 20-30 Gulls (Ring-bills?), 4 Crows - Some of the gulls followed the train, The crows alighted on the fences bounding the mile. 19. Cheyenne to N. Platte - Many small sparrows in grass - some showed pure white underparts. Some had rather long tails. One very close flock of several hundred birds - looked too small for Blackbirds (starlings?). Crows at N. Platte. Meadowlark also - 20 Chicago - Rain - Crows just west of city. Gulls over canal. Visited the Field Museum. 21. Takoma Park, Md. Warm; strong breeze. Cloudy. Spent one to two hours in the woods which were in brilliant autumn foliage - oaks (red), maples (yellow), sumachs (red) pines & small cedars. Many migrants. Along the streets saw flocks of starlings. Many Turkey Vultures. In woods: Hairy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, Crow, Goldfinch, White-throated Sparrows (hundreds), Slate-colored Junco's (ab.), Song Sparrow (1), Towhee, Cardinal (2), Trifled Titmouse (several) Carolina Chickadee (1 flock), Golden-crowned Kinglets (many) Ruby-crowned Kinglets (several); Blue birds (several) in garden and a Humming bird at dusk in garden. 22 Rain came down in sheets as we left Takoma Park at 8 a.m - Continued during ride to Philadelphia and Vineland. Cleared during night. Warm.
