38 Journal Sullivan, S. Burrow, Alaska July 29 Went to the shop and picked up the pins and drilled meter sticks this morning. Then completed building the apparatus. Use: As the pin descends to the ground surface - the no. of grass blades touched (their sp. + how many plants are involved) are recorded. Over the course of a season one should be able to determine decreases in plant density, effects of lemming utilization of certain individual plants, and perhaps other information. The transects are to be 2 meters long and a number (undetermined at present) will be placed in each habitat type at Barrow. Emphasis will be given to those habitat types that are of known value to the lemming. Sorted insects in soil and pond edge samples for Holmes this afternoon. After supper checked trap lines IIIA, IIIB; IVA, IVB; V and VII after dinner - nothing at all in traps. July 30 Bright, warm sunny day today. Checked trap lines - captured 1 ad of Lemming IVA 4.6.
