Sullivan, J. Barrow, Alaska Journal July 26 (odd) and the heart weed taken at Cape Simpson. Schultz showed slides concerning his project on chemical constituents of soils, plants, and animals (mainly dealing with phosphorus) and Mullen spoke on his work after supper. July 27 Worked on Taxonomy of grasses and field notes this morning. Pitelka and I went to the field (toward trap lines IX and X) and considered plans for the vegetation survey. Worked on the pin-drop apparatus in the afternoon. Saw Henry T. work about making some pins and drilling holes in 2 meter sticks and 2 other 1 meter boards. These should be ready tomorrow. July 28 The trip to Dall Lake may be today - weather at Barrow in foggy but better to the SW. Worked on grasses till 1030 when Kaltén, Holmer and I were alerted for the flight. Took off at 1120 in the float plane - Jim was the pilot. Saw a snowy owl just past the monument, a 8 " " west of Wainwright and 1 more owl farther west. The foggy weather was mostly NE of Wainwright - so we were soon in the seen. 2 gray whales were spotted by Holmer lying just below the surface - and breaking through for air a couple of times.
