Sullivan J. Barrow, Alaska Journal journey. Werner von Braun and party arrived at Barrow today. There was a reception in the library from 18:30 to 2000. July 20 0800-0930 checked trap lines - 1 r-b sandpiper chick taken - no lemmings. Weather - cool and cloudy. 1000-1200 Put up a r-b s. Counted insects after lunch (sample 11). A cold rain began to fall around 1400. Set out snap trap line IX and X plus checking lines I and II this afternoon. 1 longspur was taken. July 21 Snowed last night and was still snowing at 0730 this morning. Checked traps 0800-0930. Lines I and II on Sax Line Ridge were hidden under the snow (the traps). IX and X traps were partially visible. Just south of lines IX and X, a Baird's gave distraction display (flew up called - little wing flutter). 2 chicks were with the adult. Took the adult and 1 chick; the other escaped. Counted insects in Holme's sample the rest of the morning and from 1300-1430. Put up a large (55.3g) juvenile r-b s. after that. After supper put up a Dicrostonyx skin (taken by Mullen + Chamberlain at the Island). The snow had receded greatly by suppertime. July 22 This morning Pitelka went along while I checked the trap lines. 2 longspurs in lines. Pitelka
